Safety Cough And Cold Medicine For Children
| Contrary to popular beliefs, there are no cure for cold and cough. Most of the cough and cold medication will not actually heal your children. They can only make your children feel more comfortable. For instance, if your children can not sleep because of the bothersome cough, cough suppressant can come to the rescue. However, it is important to take your children to Pediatrician or health care professional, if the symptoms are not improving within a few days. |
Cough Syrups:
Cough syrups usually contain cough suppressant ingredients such as dextromethorphan (DM), codeine and hydrocone. Cough syrup ingredients may cause drowsiness. Talk to your family healthcare professional, if your children have asthma or pneumonia. Cough syrups generally should not be used with children with asthma, because they may have difficulty breathing.
Decongestants:
Decongestants can relieve stuffy nose, respiratory infection, and allergies. Typical decongestants usually include phenylephrine, psuedophedrine, oxymetazoline, or phenylephrine ingredients. Decongstants can be safely used for short period of time between three to five days.
Expectorants:
Expectorants help loosen mucus. Some Pediatrician believes that they are unnecessary for children.
Multi-symptom Cold Remedies:
Multi symptom cold remedies usually have all the drugs to relieve cold symptoms like cough suppressants, antihistamine, and fever reliever. Although it may seem convenient to use these medications, it is not the best for your children. If your children do not have all the symptoms, you should avoid using it.
