It is evident that a child who has more self esteem is happier, confident and creative. Parents play a vital role in building their child’ self esteem.
Spending time with your child and listening to him is a great way to build self esteem in your child. It will make him feel loved. Take your child’s suggestions and arguments seriously. Don’t brush them off. When you criticize him, let him know that it his behavior you disapprove of and not him. Do not use words like “you’re useless” or “you’re lazy”. Give them appropriate responsibilities according to age. Let them exercise their own judgment from time to time.
If your child is getting bullied at school, it could lower his self esteem. If he comes home with such a complaint, talk to his teacher. Encourage your child to make friends at school. Do not neglect your child’s appearance, since it could be a cause of bullying at school. Ensure that your child goes to school well groomed.
Watch out for signs of low self esteem in your child. It could be in the form of being extremely shy in front of strangers, being indecisive and not being confident of his own abilities. Help your child in raising his self-confidence. Accept help from him whenever he volunteers and praise him for his efforts. Encourage your child to take part in extracurricular activities like sports, drama or public speaking. Having a particular skill will help to raise your child’s self esteem immensely.
