Teaching your kid to be self sufficient will go a long way in building up your child’s personality. Your child will be able to trust his own judgment rather than look to others to guide him.
As parents, it is important to know when to let go of your child. You want your child to be independent rather than insecure. Do not hover around your child all the time. The process of teaching self reliance begins when your child is a toddler. Let your child brush his teeth or feed himself when he wants to. Let him indulge in free play where he has a chance to get creative. Allow your child to take part in household chores if he wants to. Leave your child alone occasionally so he can learn to entertain himself.
Treat your child like a human being who has a mind of his own. If he wants to try something new, let him do it without giving instructions. Do not encourage them to come to your aid every time a small problem arises. Don’t interfere until they get something wrong or ask for your help. And of course don’t discourage them when they are not able to complete a task assigned to them.
Teach your child common tasks like tying his shoelaces. Encourage your child to make a list of his homework or chores. That way, he will remember to complete his tasks himself. Over time, he will turn into a more responsible and independent person.
