Cleaning Your Baby
| Keeping your baby clean is an activity that will take up a lot of your time as a parent. Bathing your baby should be a bonding experience for you and your baby. Use lukewarm water to bathe your baby. Use a soft wet cloth to clean your baby’s face. Soap should only be used on the rest of the body. Shampoo should be used once or twice a week. Dry off your baby with a soft towel before putting on new clothes. |

You also need to get used to changing your baby’s diapers. Have all the items you need ready i.e. a diaper, diaper fasteners, nappy rash cream, wet cloth and warm water for cleaning. Clean the diaper area thoroughly with warm water. To prevent diaper rash, let the skin dry completely before using the new diaper and use a nappy rash cream. Clean the creases of the thighs and buttocks. While cleaning girls, wipe from front to back to avoid infection of the urinary tract. Open the diaper and place your baby’s bottom in it. If applying pins, keep a hand between the skin and the pin to avoid a pin prick. The diaper should not be too tight.
Change your baby’s nappy or diaper as soon as it is soiled. Cloth diapers should be washed with detergents that are free of any dyes or artificial fragrances. If using disposable diapers, you may find that the baby develops rash on using a particular brand. Change the brand in such a case.
