According to the statistics released by the US Census Bureau in August 2007, in the United States, there are approximately 13.6 million single parents. These single parents are responsible for raising 21.2 million children. This roughly translates to 26 percent of children under the age of 21 years.
Following is the average single parenting statistics according to the US Census Bureau:
- In the US, nearly 84 percent of custodial parents are mothers while 16 percent are fathers.
- Out of the single mothers, 84 percent are divorced or separated; 34 percent have never been married; 22 percent are remarried; and 1 percent is widowed.
- 57 percent of single father are either divorced or separated; 24 percent are remarried; 18 percent were never married; and one percent is widowed.
- Nearly 79 percent of single mothers are employed out of which 50 percent are working full time while 29 percent are working part time.
- 92 percent of single fathers are employed; out of which 74 percent are employed full time and the remaining 18 percent work part time.
- In the US, 27.7 percent of single mothers and their children live in poverty while 11.1 percent single fathers and their children live in poverty.
- 31 percent of single parents receive public assistance and just 6 percent of single parents receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
- Nearly 37.7 percent of single mothers in the US are 40 years or older.
- 56 percent of single mothers in the US are raising one child while nearly 44 percent of single mother are raising two or more children.
