Parenting Advice On Teen Drinking

Every year thousand of teens die from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving. Alcohol abuse is not only adult problem. Sadly, the statistics show that young adults between the ages of twelve and twenty also face alcohol problems, even though they are still underage. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism, average American boys and girls start drinking for the first time at the age of thirteen and fifteen years.

Most Americans start drinking regularly at 15.9 years old. Car Crashes, homicides, and suicides are leading cause of death for young adolescences between the ages of fifteen to twenty four years old, and alcohol is the number one leading factor in all three.

Why do teenagers drink? :

Although some teens may just want to experience alcohol, researchers suggest that drinking may be an expression of adolescent turmoil. Alcohol and other drugs abuse may also associate with mental problems like depression and anxiety, antisocial personality disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder ( ODD ).

How can parent help?

First of all, do not start drinking yourself. The research indicates that parents’ drinking behavior and attitudes toward drinking have strong influence toward your children’s drinking behavior. Teenagers who are warned about the danger of alcohol from their parents will be less likely to start drinking. It is also important to be close to your teenagers. Even though they may act like they do not need you in their lives, they still need your support and guidance.

Finally, if your teenagers have problems with alcohol abuse, it is important to get help. Alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence rarely go away by themselves. The most effective way to fight the addiction is through support from health care professional or self help support group.
