Postpartum Psychosis Depression

Pregnancy usually causes intense emotional changes. But every one in ten new mothers experiences Postpartum Depression (PPD). New mothers should be able to recognize the symptoms of this condition.

Some of the symptoms associated with PPD are:

  • Lack of interest in life for two weeks or more following delivery
  • Excessive anxiety
  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Loss of appetite
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Postpartum Depression is often confused with having “baby blues”. This usually goes away after a few days. However, if these symptoms persist beyond two weeks, consult a psychiatrist.

Postpartum depression is blamed on fluctuations in hormone levels inside a woman’s body. But it is now known that PPD can occur due to a variety of causes. Studies show that women with marital problems or substance abuse history are more likely to have PPD.

Psychotherapy and use of Antidepressant medication is used in the treatment of PPD. Drugs like Prozac and Paxil are commonly used drugs. These drugs act by correcting the deficiency of neurotransmitters in the brain. However the safety of using these drugs in nursing mothers is yet to be proven.

The vast majority of cases of PPD can be treated without resorting to drugs that may potentially harm you or your child. There are foods and supplements that can help to replenish the neurotransmitter levels in your brain. Consult your doctor and take foods rich in the amino acid Tyrosine, copper and vitamin C. Remember that PPD can be treated and mothers can regain their sense of well-being with simple measures.
